1.0 Introduction

1.01

The practice is comprised of a core team specialising in a combination of landscape architecture and sculpture. Each of these skills operate either individually or are integrated to form a design solution.

1.02

Jeremy Linden qualified as a Landscape Architect in 1986 and became a professional member of the Landscape Institute in 1993.

1.03

During his career he has worked with a wide range of practices from local authority, private practice, Groundwork Trusts and for an extended period as a freelance Landscape Architect.

1.04

The experience of acting as a freelance landscape architect involved the setting up of a multi-disciplinary practice with the inclusion of architects, engineers, planners, ecologists and artists on individual and appropriate schemes.

1.05

Schemes carried out have included large areas of public open space, waterside schemes, urban renewal, ecology parks, schools and play areas and latterly working for Hastings Borough Council as project manager and landscape architect to deliver the Alexandra Park Restoration on behalf of Heritage Lottery Trustees.

1.06

Areas of work have recognized the importance of a commitment to the community and setting up, or working alongside existing groups. Experience with community groups has involved the organisation and delivery of Planning for Real exercises as well as ongoing development of groups to become self-sustaining charitable organisations

1.07

Additional areas of work have included schemes on purely commercial grounds operating alongside property developers.

2.0 Practice Formula

2.01

The purpose of the practice is the development of the environment to enrich each open space with its own identity and recognition by the community.

2.02

The intention of the practice is to recognise the individual attributes identified by the unique position, history and current use of the site and to produce a design solution that is appropriate for the site.

2.03

The arts are recognised as an essential component of environmental design from the initial stages of communication with the client and throughout project design.

2.04

The practice recognises the importance of communication at all levels through the development of a project and its potential social impact.

2.05

The practice is based in Hastings and covers south-east England, while taking on individual projects from further afield

2.06

Further to the commission of a project, the practice will engage with the client on the following basis as required:

  • Initial commission.
  • Development of the brief.
  • Site analysis and environmental assessment.
  • Site survey.
  • Working with community organisations as required.
  • Design.
  • Production of detail drawings.
  • Compilation and submission of tender documents.
  • Reporting on tender to client.
  • Site inspection.
  • Project management.
  • Contract management.
  • Recommendations for future site use.
  • The practice will recommend appropriate practices to perform specialist work outside the scope of Landscape Architects.

3.0 Approach

3.01

The practice will be available to commence projects from May 2003

3.02

The practice would propose to run projects from its Hastings office but would be able to work from local practices if required

3.03

A clearly defined programme of regular communication between client and the landscape practice is recommended to promote understanding and maximize an effective work process.

3.04

At this stage and without a firm brief or programme, it is difficult to offer a clearly defined approach to be adopted for projects. However, if work is allocated to the practice, it is recommended that a joint initial discussion and formulation of a brief and work programme will provide a detailed understanding at an early stage.
