'Columns of Light' Alexandra Park Boating Lake |
'Columns of Light' - Inspiration The Design is based on the form of intersecting arches that frame views beyond the boating lake. The arches represent the shape of the trees in Alexandra Park and are also based on the form of the War Memorial. At night the glass arches will be lit in various colours as a complement to the streetlights on the seafront, the coloured columns of light will be reflected in the water. During the day the arches will not be lit but rely on the colour of the glass. Water will be pumped through the columns from the base which will flood the upper section and overflow creating a sheer curtain or water. |

The arches are made of green tinted glass. The top section and horizontal bands down the colun will be scalloped to reflect light and create a jewel-like effect. The ripples in the water will intersect and reflect the green tinted glass of the columns. The glass will create the effect of form but also allow the eye to pass through the glass. Glass is another form of liquid. |

During the day, the columns will be the colour of green tinged glass, with falling water. At dusk the lights will colour the columns and reflect through the water to mirror the street lights on the sea road. |

Local residents were asked to take part in meetings to discuss the design of their new park and to learn the skills of mosaicing to add a personal touch to the original hexagons kept as part of the design. The local skills centre cut out the trees and fence sections from marine ply to a supplied template. The gate was based on the name of the local group BULB (Brighten up Long Benton). |
